Lord of the Dance is a magical musical, based on Irish folk music and dancing. The performance is created, choreographed, and produced by the Irish-American dancer Michael Flatley. Ronan Hardiman composes the original soundtrack. The dance director of the production is Marie Duffy Pask.
For several years Michael Flatley took a starring role. He also had creative roles and starred in three additional spectacular shows - Riverdance, Feet of Flames and Celtic Tiger.
The story of Lord of the Dance is about the fight against the evil lord Don Dorcha from taking over the Planet Ireland. The second plot follows the fate of Saoirse, the Irish Cailín. She fights for the love of the Lord of the Dance against the wicked Morrighan, the Temptress. Incredibly good dancers represent this fascinating story. The traditional Irish dance is performed with the upper body quite still and with their arms down by the side. The entire choreography is based on a much-accelerated style of Irish dance. This brings an enormous energy and connection between the dancers and the audience.
Lord of the Dance premiered at The Point Theatre in Dublin on July 2, 1996. After several weeks the production began a four week sell-out run of performances at the Coliseum Theatre in London. In March 1997, the unique dance show moved to America and ran thirteen consecutive sell-out shows at New York's prestigious Radio City Music Hall. The big success for the production came after performing at the 69th Academy Awards Ceremony in Hollywood before the global television audience. Since then, over 50 million people in 60 different countries have seen the live performances of Lord of the Dance. There are currently two Lord of the Dance troupes, touring the globe - one within North America, and one touring worldwide. It has been recognized as the world's highest grossing dance show, selling in excess of $500,000,000 worth of tickets.
